What a great holiday weekend! Yet again, this holiday was not just a one day event. Sean had Thursday off from work, so we took full advantage of a long 4-day weekend.
We started the holiday with one of our weekly bike rides. We loaded the bikes in the car and traveled out to Busse Woods Forest Preserve in the northwest suburbs. The have a nice loop that is just about 8 miles long. Colin enjoyed looking for elk, deer, and birds from his trailer behind daddy’s bike. The day ended at a neighbor’s backyard bbq with lots of friends and good food.
The 4th of July also started with fun. We started a tradition last year of attending the Edgebrook neighborhood’s 4th of July parade. Colin loves parades – the fire trucks, marching bands, and candy tossed to the onlookers! After a fun day with family, we grilled ribs, corn on the cob, and sweet potatoes and ate dinner outside on the back porch.
Saturday was a day filled with music. We went to a Kids Concert at Ravinia and danced to music from Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players. Gramma was there, too, with yummy snacks. Afterwards, we went back to Gramma’s for a swim in the pool, bubbles, and other fun.
The weekend ended with more family fun. We finally made it over to the pool at Portage Park. The kiddie pool is still a favorite for Colin. It’s a zero-depth pool, so Colin can easily get in and out. There are so many sprayers that can be opened and closed with levers and wheels – Colin has it all mastered. With both mommy and daddy at the pool with him, he was finally up for going down the slide and ending with a splash in the pool. After a slide into the pool, Colin and daddy ventured into the big lap pool. They practiced swimming on his belly and floating on his back. After about an hour of bobbing and splashing through the pools, he was soaking wet and shivering, so we packed up the stroller and walked home for lunch. We ended the day with a short stroller ride to the fire house to visit with the firemen and fire truck. Colin was quite tired and told us that he was ready for bed after all the fun of the long weekend.
We have a few days to get back into the summer routine and then we’re off to a short camping trip!
