We have 11 weeks of summer vacation this year and Colin and I are working very hard to keep it busy and fun. We just finished our 1st week and here’s a quick look at some of the fun we had.
It’s been a while since I’ve needed to take Colin with me to run errands as I’ve been able to do most of that while he’s been in school, but we ventured to Old Orchard for a few quick additions to our summer wardrobes. Since he was a good helper, we stopped at the mall play space for some climbing, sliding, and jumping before heading home. It’s always fun to explore a new playground!
We go to the library on a pretty regular basis and usually walk or drive, but this week was a special treat – we took the bus! Colin packed his library books into his backpack and we walked down the block to the bus stop. He was so excited to wait, climb aboard, and ring the bell to request a stop that he didn’t mind waiting about 10 minutes each way. (We definitely could have walked there faster, but that’s just not as fun as the bus!)
Colin loves to swim and the local pool wasn’t open yet, so we decided to check out Whealen Pool. Oh my goodness – it was amazing fun! There were sprays and water hoses and a slide to help keep us cool on the warm day. We packed a picnic lunch and ate in the shade. After about an hour and a half of splashing, we headed off on our next adventure of the day – the tire store to fix our flat tire. Weren’t we lucky that our favorite cupcake store – Nutphree’s Bakery – was right across the street from the tire store. We visited Nutphree’s and enjoyed a cupcake and cake pop before stocking up on more cupcakes, cake pops, and assorted candy for home.
We went to our first Storytime with Barefoot Books at Perkolator this week. Colin needed some encouragement to sit and listen to the stories, but afterwards, he had fun playing with all the other children. One of his classmates was there, so it was nice to see a familiar face. He also enjoyed his lemonade treat!
Colin started another round of swimming lessons this week and he loved it. They reviewed all the same skills that he learned over the winter and he was able to master them all again. He said that water was cold, but that didn’t seem to deter him. He’s excited to go back again next week.
In addition to finding a new playground this week, we also visited our neighborhood playground for a few hours. We ran into another one of his classmates on the swings and Colin had fun swinging, climbing, sliding, and running with her.
One night a week, the Morton Arboretum hosts Thursday Family Nights with live music in the Children’s Garden. Uncle Kevin and Aunt Debbie met us at the arboretum for a picnic dinner and fun. Unfortunately, the music was cancelled due to weather, but we picnicked, climbed, slid, and explored nonetheless. Colin even got to explore Uncle Kevin’s new truck!
We ended our week with a rainy day. We got caught in quite a downpour and got pretty wet while we ran under our umbrella for a few blocks. In the end, it was a good day for a long nap for both of us during a dreary, rainy, and cold afternoon.
We’re looking forward to the adventures that our 2nd week of summer will bring!
